Clean Skincare vs. Natural Skincare: What's the Difference?
Adopting a clean skincare routine
With people becoming more health conscious, reassessing how they care for their bodies, they are also thinking critically about what they put ON their faces. For many, adopting a clean skincare routine has become as important as exercise and diet.
Responding to consumer demands for healthier, safer, eco-friendly alternatives, the beauty industry is now experiencing a shift toward “clean beauty”, skincare that is free of controversial ingredients.
Clean skincare brands are dedicated to using pure plant-derived or synthetic ingredients (like Hyaluronic Acid) which cause no harm to the health of individuals or the environment. Because these brands typically aim for transparency, the consumer knows exactly which ingredients are in a product and the active results they deliver.
What is natural skincare?
Clean skincare has grown out of a larger natural skincare movement. Today, many skincare products cite “natural ingredients” in their formulas, which can confuse consumers into thinking they are safer and more efficacious.
In fact, this might not be the case. Natural skincare may contain ingredients that contain little or no benefit. Just because an ingredient is natural doesn’t mean it is necessarily good for your skin.
Moreover, the definition of “natural” is a bit murky. All skincare must be processed in some way so, really, none are authentically natural.
Know your ingredients
There is really the only way to know how clean your skincare is. Take a look at the label on your products.
Skincare brands are obligated to be transparent about their formulas. The EU’s Cosmetic Regulation, for example, establishes clear labeling guidelines, making it easy for consumers to know what is in the products they use. The label, which includes a logo designating a product’s country of origin, also reflects standards that express a certain set of norms. A product’s manufacturer is obligated to uphold those norms.
Labels will include such information as product claims, precautions of use, warnings and, of course, the list of ingredients. If you aren’t sure what an ingredient is (Tocopheryl Acetate anyone?), or have questions about its efficacy or safety, try Googling “cosmetic ingredients”. You really can find everything on the Internet.
